Gender Minister assures POLWA of support for capacity building and family welfare

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured the Police Wives Association (POLWA) of the Ministry's support for capacity building and social welfare programmes following a meeting with the Association's national executives.

The assurance came when the President of POLWA, Mrs Eunice A. Yohuno, led a delegation on a courtesy call to the Ministry to discuss the welfare of police families, support for victims of the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Barracks and opportunities for future collaboration.

Dr Lartey praised the Association for its commitment to supporting police families and acknowledged the contribution of police spouses to national security.

"Police wives make enormous sacrifices to support their families while their spouses serve the nation. Their welfare is important, and the Ministry is ready to work with the Association to strengthen their resilience and improve their livelihoods," she said.

The Minister encouraged POLWA to submit formal requests for training whenever the need arose, assuring the delegation that the Ministry would make technical experts and resource persons available to facilitate programmes in areas identified by the Association.

"Our doors remain open. Once we receive your requests, we will do our best to provide the necessary technical support and resource persons to ensure your members benefit from quality training," she added.

Dr Lartey also called on the Association to support the implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121), describing the law as an important framework for advancing equal opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making.

She presented copies of the Act to the delegation and encouraged them to become advocates for its implementation within their communities.

The President of POLWA, Mrs Eunice A. Yohuno, requested the Ministry's partnership in organising skills training and capacity building programmes to equip members of the Association with practical and income-generating skills.

She said strengthening the economic independence of police spouses would improve the welfare of their families and help them better cope with the demands associated with police service.

The meeting ended with both the Ministry and the Police Wives Association reaffirming their commitment to working together on programmes that will improve the welfare, economic empowerment and resilience of police families across the country.
