Sulemana Abdul-Samed, popularly known as Awuche and widely recognised as Ghana's tallest man, has died at the age of 33 after battling health complications linked to gigantism.

He passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been receiving specialised treatment following a deterioration in his condition.

Awuche stood at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres), making him one of the tallest known individuals in Ghana.

A family source confirmed his death to Graphic Online, indicating that burial arrangements were underway in Tamale in accordance with Islamic traditions.

A native of Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, Awuche was initially admitted to the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care.

His health struggles drew nationwide attention after appeals were made for financial support to help fund his treatment.

Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama later assumed responsibility for his medical expenses at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and pledged to facilitate specialist treatment abroad should the need arise.

On July 11, 2026, Ibrahim Mahama's aide, Rafik Mahama, announced that following a comprehensive reassessment by doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Awuche would no longer undergo the amputation of his left leg, contrary to an earlier recommendation contained in the referral from the Baptist Medical Centre.

He also reaffirmed Mr Mahama's commitment to covering all costs associated with Awuche's treatment.

Awuche became a household name because of his extraordinary height, which earned him recognition as Ghana's tallest man.

According to his family, he was not born with the condition. They explained that he began experiencing abnormal growth at a young age, which was later diagnosed as gigantism.

His remarkable stature made him a familiar figure across the country, often drawing attention wherever he appeared.

News of his passing has sparked an outpouring of grief, with tributes pouring in from family members, friends and members of the public, particularly on social media, who have remembered him for his resilience and unique presence.
