Tinubu Approves Expansion of Nigerian Army From 8 to 12 Divisions What It Means for the Military Map

As Nigeria contends with security threats on multiple fronts, President Bola Tinubu has approved a major restructuring of the Nigerian Army, expanding its divisional structure from eight to twelve. The move, announced Thursday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, is designed to decentralize command and sharpen the military's response to the country's shifting security landscape.

Four new divisions, four new zones
The expansion adds new divisional headquarters in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City, filling in coverage gaps across the North Central, North East, and South-South regions. Under the new structure, each of the 12 divisions is assigned specific states:
1 Division (Kaduna) — Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa
2 Division (Ibadan) — Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo
3 Division (Jos) — Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe
5 Division (Makurdi, new) — Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi
6 Division (Port Harcourt) — Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River
7 Division (Maiduguri) — Borno, Yobe
8 Division (Sokoto) — Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara
9 Division (Ilorin, new) — Kwara, Niger
10 Division (Jalingo, new) — Taraba, Adamawa
81 Division (Lagos) — Lagos, Ogun
82 Division (Enugu) — Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo
83 Division (Benin City, new) — Edo, Delta, Bayelsa

The Presidency says this finer-grained territorial breakdown will improve command and control, strengthen border security, and speed up military responses to emerging threats particularly in the North Central states hit hard by banditry and communal violence, and the South-South, which has lacked a dedicated divisional command until now.

Rollout in two phases
Implementation will happen in stages. The first phase establishing the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions and reorganizing existing formations is expected to be complete by September 2026. The second phase, covering the new 83rd Division in Benin City, is targeted for December 2026.

Backed by a recruitment drive
The restructuring comes alongside approval to recruit 28,000 additional personnel, part of a broader push that has also included new equipment acquisitions, troop welfare improvements, and continued investment in operational readiness. Tinubu commended Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu and troops for their service, reaffirming his commitment to keeping the armed forces "adequately equipped, motivated and capable" of protecting Nigerians.

What it signals
Analysts will be watching whether the reorganization genuinely closes operational gaps particularly in Benue, Kwara/Niger, and the South-South, areas that previously fell between existing divisional boundaries or whether it stretches an already strained army thinner across a bigger map without matching increases in funding and equipment per zone.
