The Ghana Police Service has disputed claims by the team of media personality and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah over the circumstances leading to his arrest during the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency executive elections.

Okatakyie Afrifa's campaign team had earlier alleged that he was arrested while attempting to enforce a High Court injunction and a directive from the NPP's National Steering Committee suspending the elections.

They also claimed he and four members of his team sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

However, in a statement issued on Monday, July 13, the Ashanti North Regional Police Command said Afrifa led a group of about 30 macho men to the polling centre at the SDA Church in Wiamoase, where they allegedly attacked police officers and disrupted the electoral process.

"On Sunday, 12th July 2026, at about 7:45 a.m., one Kwame Afrifa Mensah, aged 43 years, led a group of about thirty (30) macho men to the SDA Church polling station. When security personnel engaged the group to ascertain the purpose of their presence, they became aggressive, attacked the police, and disrupted the electoral process by throwing electoral materials onto the ground," the statement said.

Police said Okatakyie Afrifa, described as the suspected ringleader, and six others were arrested to assist investigations, while the remaining members of the group fled the scene.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the media personality claimed some of his supporters had been sidelined in the electoral process and that he had obtained an interlocutory injunction to halt the election.

"However, neither the Electoral Commission nor the Police received any court order or injunction directing that the elections be suspended. Following the intervention of the police, calm was restored and voting resumed under adequate security," the police said.

The statement further disclosed that later on Sunday, Okatakyie Afrifa and another suspect, Osman Awuni, complained of ill health and were admitted to the Mampong Government Hospital, where they remain under police guard while receiving treatment.
