The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed down Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian Schools in the Yendi Municipality following an attack by some armed men over a disagreement involving an attempt to construct a commercial shed on the school premises.
The GES said the matter which occurred on Thursday, July 9, has been reported to the Police, while engagements continue with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of learners and staff before the school is reopened.
The service said "Preliminary findings indicate that the incident arose from a disagreement between some community members and the school authorities over an attempt to erect a commercial shed on the school premises.”
According to the Service, some armed individuals stormed the school following the disagreement and fired multiple shots into the air, causing panic among students and teachers.
The Headmaster of Zohe E.P. Junior High School, Mr Mohammed Shani Gazali, was assaulted during the incident and later sought medical attention at a hospital before being discharged.
The GES said no deaths were recorded, but the attack disrupted academic activities and resulted in damage to parts of the school’s property.
“In the interest of the safety and security of learners and staff, the Zohe E.P. Schools have been closed down temporarily while engagements continue with relevant stakeholders," the service said.
Management of the GES condemned the attack and warned that acts of violence against members of the school community and actions that threaten a safe learning environment will not be tolerated.
The Service said it expects the school to reopen on Monday, July 13, subject to clearance from the security authorities.
The GES assured parents and guardians that the safety of students remains a priority.
