Gabriel Agambila backs government over decision to decline Ramaphosas visit

The Founder of Alagumgube, Gabriel Agambila, has defended the government's handling of the aborted visit by Cyril Ramaphosa to Ghana, arguing that transparency and national interest should take precedence over diplomatic sensitivities.

Reacting to public debate following criticism by veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Agambila said the administration of President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Foreign Affairs acted appropriately by declining the visit and openly informing Ghanaians about the circumstances surrounding the decision.

In a statement, Agambila wrote: "I feel the President and the Minister for Foreign Affairs did well by declining the visit and letting Ghanaians know what is happening. There is nothing like secrets in this present government."

He further argued that Ghana should take a firmer diplomatic stance against South Africa, suggesting that the country should consider becoming the first to sever diplomatic ties if circumstances warrant such action.

"We should rather be the first country to cut our diplomatic ties with South Africa. Though we were heavily involved in their freedom," he stated, referencing Ghana's historic role in supporting South Africa's struggle against apartheid.

His comments come after Kwesi Pratt criticised the government's handling of the diplomatic episode, describing the developments surrounding President Ramaphosa's planned visit as avoidable and potentially damaging to Ghana's international relations.
