President John Dramani Mahama has called on the newly sworn in Auditor-General, Dr. Pamela Graham, to discharge her duties with independence, integrity and courage, describing accountability as a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic governance and national development.
Speaking at Dr. Graham’s swearing in ceremony at the Presidency, President Mahama said the occasion represented more than the fulfilment of a constitutional requirement, noting that it reaffirmed the country's commitment to transparency, the rule of law and prudent management of public resources.
He stressed that the Office of the Auditor-General plays a critical role in protecting the public purse by ensuring that state funds are used efficiently and responsibly.
“The work of the Auditor-General extends far beyond auditing accounts. It strengthens confidence in public institutions, promotes prudent financial management, deters waste and corruption, and provides Parliament and the people of Ghana with the assurance that those entrusted with public resources remain accountable for every cedi they spend,” the President said.
President Mahama observed that Ghanaians now demand greater transparency and accountability from public institutions and expressed confidence that Dr. Graham possesses the experience and competence to lead the Audit Service successfully.
He reminded the new Auditor-General that her primary responsibility is to the Constitution and the people of Ghana, urging her to remain impartial and allow the law and evidence to guide every decision.
“As you assume office today, you do so not in service to any government, political party or individual, but in service to the Constitution and the people of Ghana,” he stated.
The President underscored the importance of safeguarding the independence of the Auditor-General's office, saying its credibility is essential to sustaining public confidence in the country's governance framework.

He also used the occasion to remind public officials that accountability is a constitutional obligation that cannot be ignored.
“Every Ministry, Department and Agency, every Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly, every state-owned enterprise and every public official must recognise that accountability is not optional; it is a constitutional obligation,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the success of the government's economic recovery programme and broader development agenda, including efforts to improve domestic revenue mobilisation, expand infrastructure, increase exports and implement the 24 Hour Economy policy, depends on the transparent and efficient use of public resources.
He pledged continued government support for the Ghana Audit Service through investments in technology, digital systems, staff development and institutional reforms to enhance its effectiveness.
The President also urged all public institutions to cooperate fully with the Auditor-General and ensure that audit recommendations are implemented, stressing that audit reports should serve as practical instruments for improving governance, strengthening financial controls and eliminating waste.
President Mahama paid tribute to the outgoing Auditor-General for his service to the nation and contributions to strengthening public financial accountability.
Congratulating Dr. Graham on her appointment, he encouraged her to build on the institution's legacy by leading with professionalism, integrity and humility.
He expressed confidence that her leadership would reinforce public trust in state institutions and strengthen accountability in the management of Ghana's public resources.
