The 42nd National Farmers' Day celebration will be held in Sunyani, Bono Region, on December 4, 2026, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced.

The event will be under the theme: “Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future.”

Mr Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture, said this at the official launch of the celebration in Accra.

He said the Bono Region was selected to host the event due to its strong agricultural potential and contribution to national food production.

“The future of Ghana is tied to the strength of our farmers. When we support the farmer, we secure our food, and when we secure our food, we safeguard the future of our nation,” he said.

Mr Opoku said the celebration would be preceded by a five-day National Agricultural Fair from November 30 to December 4, 2026, featuring exhibitions by agribusinesses, research institutions, farmer-based organisations, mechanisation service providers, financial institutions and development partners.

The fair would also include innovation and research presentations by universities and research institutions, the Bono Regional Focus Day, a tour for national award winners, and a National Farmers' Forum to address issues affecting the agricultural sector and farmers' welfare.

The climax of the celebration will be the National Farmers' Day durbar and awards ceremony on December 4, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to attend.

Mr Opoku said 32 national award categories would be presented, including Overall National Best Farmer, National Best Female Farmer, National Best Youth Farmer, National Best Livestock Farmer, National Best Fish Farmer, National Best Cocoa Farmer, National Best Agricultural Extension Agent and National Best Agricultural Researcher.

Regional and district awards will also be presented to recognise outstanding farmers, schools, farmer-based organisations and other institutions.

Mrs Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, in a statement read on her behalf, said the celebration remained a key platform for recognising the contribution of farmers, fishers and fish processors to food security, employment creation and national development.

She called for strengthened collaboration among government, the private sector, researchers and development partners to promote innovation, sustainability and responsible resource management in agriculture and fisheries.

Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, Bono Regional Minister, said the region was honoured to host the national event for the first time since its creation, and pledged the commitment of stakeholders to ensure a successful celebration.

National Farmers' Day, instituted in 1985, is observed annually on the first Friday of December to recognise the contribution of farmers and fishers to Ghana's socio-economic development and to promote agricultural productivity and food security.
