Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will take decisive steps to tackle the country's perennial flooding challenges.
Her comments follow the heavy rains on Monday, June 29, which caused severe flooding in parts of Accra and other communities, claiming lives, destroying property and disrupting economic activities.
Official figures as at Tuesday, inidated that the floods displaced more than 38,000 people, claimed 12 lives and left seven others missing across several parts of the country.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana programme on Thursday, July 2, Shamima Muslim said the Mahama administration recognises the expectations of Ghanaians and remains committed to delivering practical solutions to the recurring flood menace.
"I accept that they expect competence from the government of the day because that is what we offered to do, and that is what President Mahama is willed to do — to deliver on his mandate to the people of Ghana. I'm sure it is because they believe that the NDC is competent enough, because if you don't have confidence in somebody, you will not call them to act, and so we will act," she said.
She argued that addressing the country's challenges should not be the sole responsibility of politicians, stressing that citizens also have a role to play in promoting accountability and supporting ethical leadership.
According to her, politicians are representatives of the people and are influenced by the values and expectations of society, making it important for citizens to consistently demand results from those they elect into office.
"The thing is not to threaten; the thing is to work together and demand action from day one from those who have put themselves up for the job. I will not sit here in the light of what has happened and say that the NPP is wrong for playing politics... I think that we are in a new Ghana, where the average Ghanaian knows what performance is and what performance art is," she stated.
