The young man who attracted widespread attention after helping retrieve a body from a commercial minibus trapped in a drain at Alajo following the June 29 floods has explained why he requested GH¢3,000 from officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) before assisting with the recovery.
Speaking in a video shared by Adom TV on July 1, the resident, identified as Atinka, said recovering bodies is not part of his responsibilities and should ordinarily be undertaken by personnel from the police and the Navy.
“This job is not my job. It’s supposed to be the Navy and the police, but because I’m also human, like the person in the drain, I had to help retrieve it,” he said.
According to reports, residents discovered the body inside a stranded commercial minibus after floodwaters receded and subsequently alerted the authorities.
Atinka said he decided to assist after emergency responders experienced difficulties retrieving the body from the drain.
The deceased has not yet been officially identified, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances under which the victim became trapped inside the vehicle during the flooding.
