President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to complement prayer and faith with hard work, discipline and responsibility, stressing that sustainable economic growth and national development can only be achieved through purposeful action.

Speaking at the 2026 National Day of Prayer in Accra on Wednesday, July 1, President Mahama said while prayer remains an important foundation of national life, it must be accompanied by diligence and commitment if the country is to realise its development aspirations.

The event brought together political leaders, members of the clergy, traditional authorities and citizens to offer prayers for peace, unity and Ghana's continued progress.

Addressing the gathering, the President called on every Ghanaian to embrace a strong work ethic and play an active role in nation building, noting that the responsibility for transforming the country rests with all citizens.

He urged Ghanaians to move beyond prayer by demonstrating discipline, dedication and accountability in their workplaces and everyday lives, saying national prosperity requires both faith and action.

Drawing from biblical teachings, President Mahama said genuine faith must be reflected in practical efforts that produce meaningful results.

“Our national journey reminds us of an enduring truth, ‘faith without works is dead,’ says James 2:26. And prayer without responsibility cannot transform an economy. Hope without discipline cannot create prosperity.

“Throughout history, God’s people have always combined faith with hard work. When Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, the people prayed but they also laboured. When Joseph prepared Egypt for the years of famine, they also planned wisely.”
