Ghana has suspended all registered firearm licences with immediate effect as the government moves to strengthen weapons control and address growing public safety concerns.
Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak announced the decision on Monday, saying the suspension will allow authorities to conduct fresh mental health assessments and review compliance among firearm holders across the country.
The move comes in the wake of recent shooting incidents, which the minister described as a new and worrying trend that poses a threat to public safety.
Mr Mubarak said the nationwide suspension forms part of a broader review of Ghana’s firearms management system aimed at improving oversight, accountability and security.
Officials say the exercise will enable security agencies to reassess licence holders, identify potential risks and ensure that firearms remain in the hands of individuals who meet all legal and safety requirements.
The government believes the review is necessary to address concerns about the misuse of firearms, noncompliance with regulations and emerging security challenges.
Authorities have assured the public that the suspension is a temporary measure and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security while reforms to the firearms licensing regime continue.
