TUE, 23 JUN 2026

The founder of the Upper East Region development advocacy group Alagumgube, Gabriel Agambila, has dismissed reports suggesting that a sod-cutting ceremony for the proposed Upper East Airport project has been scheduled for June 29, 2026.

According to Mr. Agambila, the project is not yet ready for such a ceremony as several critical ground and administrative processes remain incomplete.

Speaking on the matter, he described the reports as misleading and alleged that those promoting the planned sod-cutting have little knowledge of the project's progress.

"There are still important groundwork and documentation processes that must be completed before any sod-cutting can take place," he stated.

Mr. Agambila further argued that it would be impractical for the President to perform a sod-cutting ceremony without the necessary machinery and preparations in place to commence work on the project.

He maintained that the Ghana Airports Company would not proceed with the commencement of the project without engaging Alagumgube, noting that the advocacy group played a significant role in championing the airport initiative and contributed substantially to the cadastral planning processes for the proposed site.

The Alagumgube founder also alleged that some leaders in the region have attempted to sideline the group and claim credit for efforts they did not initiate. Despite this, he expressed confidence that the group's contributions to the airport project and regional development would continue to speak for themselves.

Mr. Agambila encouraged members of the association and supporters of the airport project to remain focused on the broader developmental needs of the Upper East Region while intensifying advocacy efforts to ensure the project eventually takes off.

The proposed Upper East Airport remains one of the region's most anticipated infrastructure projects, with many residents hoping it will boost economic growth, improve connectivity, and attract investment to the area.
