The Tamale Circuit Court has granted bail to two midwives from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga who are facing charges in connection with the alleged disappearance of a newborn baby at the facility.
The accused persons, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, appeared before Her Honour Afua Srakubea Agyeman-Darbu, who admitted them to bail pending the continuation of the case.
The court granted each accused person bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with two sureties and directed that all bail conditions be satisfied before they can be released.
Frank Atanga and Mariam Mohammed have been charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction following investigations into the disappearance of the newborn.
According to the prosecution, the two are alleged to have played roles in circumstances surrounding the missing child, leading to their arrest and subsequent prosecution.
The incident has generated widespread public interest in the East Gonja Municipality and beyond, with residents calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the facts and ensure accountability.
While the prosecution is yet to fully present its evidence in court, the charges suggest investigators suspect a coordinated effort in relation to the alleged disappearance of the infant.
The accused persons have denied wrongdoing and remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The case has been adjourned to July 9, 2026, when both accused persons are expected to reappear before the court for further proceedings.
