Former Legal Advisor to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Victoria Bright, has criticised the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), accusing the institution of failing to adequately educate Ghanaians on important civic responsibilities.

The NCCE is mandated to educate Ghanaians on their civic rights and responsibilities and promote public awareness of national issues to strengthen democratic governance and responsible citizenship.

However, the legal practitioner argued that the commission has not done enough to raise public awareness on issues such as sanitation, environmental protection and responsible citizenship.

She argued that the situation has been contributing to challenges including flooding and pollution.

Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, June 15, Ms. Bright questioned the visibility and effectiveness of the NCCE, arguing that the institution appears active only during election periods.

"One thing I also always wonder is the NCCE. We don't hear anything about them at all. During elections, they sort of come out for two seconds, and then that's it. They go away again on their salaries every month until four years, and then they come out for their two seconds," she said.

She stressed that the commission should be playing a leading role in educating communities on sanitation and environmental issues, especially at a time when flooding and waste management remain major concerns across the country.

According to her, the NCCE should be working closely with local authorities and community leaders to drive sustained behavioural change among citizens.

"They should be all over this flooding issue. They should be all over this refuse issue. They should be going to communities, educating people. I want to know what they are doing with the tax money. What are they doing?" she questioned.

Ms. Bright further called on the commission to make its activities more visible to the public and demonstrate how public resources allocated to it are being utilised.
