Concerns are rising among sections of the Ghanaian public over what they describe as an increasing culture of begging at the Accra International Airport, a situation they fear could damage the country’s international image.
Frequent airport users have taken to social media to express frustration over reports that individuals are routinely soliciting money from passengers and visitors, a practice popularly referred to as “nokofio.”
According to multiple online posts, the issue is no longer isolated but appears to be spreading across different parts of the airport, with some travellers claiming that such requests have become a common part of their experience.
Critics say the trend is creating discomfort for both local and international passengers and risks undermining Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming gateway to West Africa.
Several social media users are therefore calling on airport authorities and relevant state agencies to investigate the matter and introduce measures to address the situation before it worsens.
They warn that if the practice continues unchecked, it could have negative implications for Ghana’s global standing, especially as the country promotes itself as a destination for tourism, business, and foreign investment.
