The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has launched a nationwide safety campaign to enforce regulations and strengthen its regional presence along the country’s inland waterways.

The campaign, themed “Life Jackets for Safety and Livelihood”, seeks to protect the livelihoods of thousands of families and businesses that depend on water transport.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, the Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, emphasised that combining community education with strict enforcement marks a decisive step toward restoring safety and security on Ghana’s waterways.

As a result, 170 Safety Guards have been commissioned to support enforcement efforts.

He reiterated that the mandate for all water travellers is uncompromising, with the strict enforcement of a “No Life Jacket, No Travel” policy at all crossing points nationwide.

The Director-General of the GMA, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, announced the distribution of 20,000 life jackets to ensure compliance with safety rules across 125 critical crossing points.

He added that this enforcement drive is supported by a strategic regional expansion, including the establishment of a new Inland Water Office in Akosombo and satellite offices in Kete-Krachi, Kpando, Saboba, and Wa, with further regional offices planned.
