Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged assault of a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, following a viral video of the incident circulating on social media, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when the health worker was reportedly attacked by a relative of a patient while enforcing visiting hours at the facility.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Regional Health Directorate described the attack as unprovoked, stating that the midwife was performing her official duties at the time.
The Directorate condemned the assault and reaffirmed its support for the affected staff member and all healthcare workers across the region, stressing that they must be able to work without fear of violence or intimidation.
It also commended the Ghana Police Service for swiftly restoring calm at the facility and arresting the suspect. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Authorities reiterated that grievances at health facilities should be channelled through designated Client Service Desks rather than through confrontation, warning that violence against health workers will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) described the incident as an “uncultured, unacceptable, and criminal act of violence against a healthcare professional whose only duty is to provide care and support to patients and their families.”
