Adubinsu Tanker Explosion: Fire Service Slams Residents for Attacking Firefighters

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has sharply criticised the hostile treatment its personnel suffered while responding to a fatal fuel tanker explosion at Adubinsu in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region.

According to the Service, firefighters were shockingly attacked by some residents as they battled the blaze and attempted to rescue victims.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOII Atta Aheng Mensah, disclosed that personnel were pelted with stones and sachet water—an assault he said severely hampered emergency operations.

He urged the public to cooperate with emergency responders, warning that such behaviour endangers lives and undermines rescue efforts.

“When our men got to the scene, they were met with hostilities. We plead with civilians to desist from that. Such behaviours will not be tolerated. There was a lot of stone pelting and even sachet water. It took the intervention of some of the elderly people there to calm these youth down for the men to work,” he said.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026, after a fuel tanker travelling from Edwenase towards Adubinsu reportedly lost control, somersaulted, and exploded. The resulting inferno engulfed six container shops and a nearby house.

Two people were confirmed dead, while several properties were destroyed. Firefighters eventually contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading further.
