Eco-Conscious Citizens environmental group is marking World Environment Day on June 5 2026 by renewing calls to the Attorney General Hon. Dr. Dominic Ayine to drop the charges against the Atronsu5 activists, who are innocent and are protecting the Atronsu landscape and the Nana Atronsu Stream, the only source of drinking water in the community from illegal and irresponsible mining.
The group calls on environmentalists and concerned citizens wherever they are, to add their voice by emailing the Attorney General to drop the charges via [email protected] or the contact form at https://minjustgh.com/contact.html#form.
The activists, including farmers, were arrested on Farmers' Day November 8 2024, denied police and court bail, and spent five nights in cells before they were granted court bail. Since then, it's been a case of adjournments, no-shows, the police still investigating, and on the last court date on April 17 2026, the Prosecution asked for an adjournment to study a petition.
Presumably this is the same *petition handed to the Attorney General's office on August 26 2025. On March 26 2026, President John Mahama met Civil Society Organisations for a Presidential Dialogue. One of the questions raised by Eco-Conscious Citizens executive director Awula Serwah was the Atronsu 5 case. The President admitted he was unaware of the case and perhaps the Attorney General, who was in the room, could answer. But there was no opportunity for him to respond.
Subsequently, a plea bargain was suggested - this was rejected, since the activists are not guilty of the conspiracy and causing unlawful damage (to excavators) charges. It is of grave concern that the perception is that the justice system is being used to intimidate environmental activists. Each court date causes great inconvenience, stress and a financial burden to the activists.
The group is calling on citizens not to be spectators and to mark World Environmental Day by adding their voices to the call on the Attorney General to drop the charges.
For residents of towns and cities who may feel geographically and emotionally distant from the mining regions, it is vital to recognise the existential danger posed by illegal mining activities. The environmental activists and journalists who venture into these areas to document and highlight this environmental terrorism merit our unwavering support.
Eco-Conscious Citizens takes the opportunity to thank NAIMOS under the leadership of Colonel Buah for removing excavators and arresting illegal miners from the Atronsu landscape in March this year. It is of concern that Colonel Buah is being re-assigned at a time when the illegal miners are believed to be regrouping, to re-enter the Atronsu landscape. We respectfully urge H.E the President to reconsider the decision to "rotate" Colonel Buah.
