The African Union Commission (AUC) has called for maximum restraint and an immediate end to fighting in Somalia following reported armed clashes in Mogadishu ahead of planned anti-government protests.
The appeal comes after Somali military forces and opposition-allied militias reportedly exchanged fire in parts of the capital on Wednesday, June 3, amid increasing political tensions.
The demonstrations are linked to opposition to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose critics argue that he has remained in office beyond the expiration of his term last month.
"The Commission calls on all parties to immediately stop the fighting and exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions," the AUC said in a press release issued on Thursday, June 4.
The Commission expressed deep concern over the security situation in Mogadishu, particularly reports of armed confrontations in civilian areas.
It urged all Somali stakeholders to pursue peaceful means of resolving political disagreements and avoid actions that could undermine stability in the country.
"The Commission urges all Somali stakeholders to resolve differences through dialogue and established constitutional processes," the statement noted.
According to the Commission, it will continue to closely monitor developments and remains ready to support peace efforts through the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
