Diaspora Group Hails Mahama’s Swift Evacuation of Ghanaians, Demands Apology from Malema

Alagumgube, a diaspora development advocacy group, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Foreign Affairs for their rapid intervention in evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

Addressing the organisation’s weekly executive meeting over the weekend, the Interim Chairman of Alagumgube in the diaspora, Dr. Francis Maltiby, praised the government and all stakeholders whose coordinated efforts ensured the safe return of affected citizens.

According to Dr. Maltiby, the swift response underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of Ghanaians abroad.

“We commend His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the hardworking Minister for Foreign Affairs, and everyone who contributed to the swift evacuation process. Their intervention ensured that our brothers and sisters returned home safely during a difficult and uncertain period,” he said.

The Founder of Alagumgube, Mr. Gabriel Agambila, went further, calling on South African political activist Julius Malema and Madam Jucinta to apologise to the Ghanaian people for criticising efforts to assist nationals caught in the violence.

Mr. Agambila dismissed suggestions that Ghanaian authorities and concerned individuals should have remained passive while compatriots faced threats and harassment.

“Did they expect us to wait until our brothers and sisters were killed before coming to their aid? We would rather bring our people home safely than bring their corpses home,” he stated.

He stressed that the safety and protection of Ghanaian citizens must always remain paramount and urged African leaders and civil society groups to unite in combating xenophobia and promoting peaceful coexistence across the continent.

The remarks come amid renewed debate over the treatment of African migrants in South Africa and growing calls for stronger regional cooperation to protect citizens living abroad.
