NDC Elders Warn Against Early 2028 Jostling, Urge Unity Behind Mahama’s Reset Agenda

The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned party members to desist from premature presidential campaign activities, stressing the need for unity, discipline, and focus as the party concentrates on governance.

The warning follows a meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026, where discussions centred on party cohesion, internal discipline, and support for the government’s Resetting Agenda.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council expressed concern over increasing reports of early campaign manoeuvres by individuals and groups within the party, noting that such actions risk undermining internal harmony and distracting from national governance priorities.

The Council reminded members that the NDC’s immediate responsibility is to deliver on its mandate to the Ghanaian people, urging all supporters to channel their energy into backing the government’s development agenda.

“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians, rather than engaging in activities that create division or unnecessary internal competition,” the statement said.

Referencing Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, the Council emphasised that the timelines for electing a presidential candidate are determined solely by the National Executive Committee (NEC). Until the NEC announces a timetable and guidelines, no individual or group is authorised to engage in any form of presidential campaigning.

“No individual, group, or interest bloc is authorised to undertake or promote any form of presidential campaign, whether directly or indirectly,” it stressed.

The Council has therefore directed all persons involved in early campaigning, mobilisation, endorsements, or related political activities to cease immediately.

It urged members to remain focused on unity and governance, assuring that internal contests will be opened at the appropriate time.

“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement added.
