ECOWAS advances operationalisation of Dangote-led Business Council to deepen regional economic integration

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has intensified efforts to strengthen regional economic integration through the operationalisation of its Business Council.

This follows a high-level working visit to the Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC), Aliko Dangote, at the Dangote Group headquarters in Lagos on Monday, May 25.

The engagement brought together senior ECOWAS officials and key stakeholders to discuss mechanisms for enhancing private sector participation in regional economic governance.

The delegation was led by the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, alongside the Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr. Habib Yaya Bappah.

Also part of the delegation were Gerard Amoi Amangoua, Technical President of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the EBC, and other members of the working group.

The visit focused on accelerating the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Business Council, which is expected to serve as a key platform for private sector involvement in the implementation of the ECOWAS regional market.

In a news release shared on Friday, May 29, ECOWAS added that the initiative is aimed at deepening economic integration and improving coordination between governments and the private sector across West Africa.

The Council is also expected to help drive policy alignment, investment facilitation and trade expansion within the subregion.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS turned 51 years on Thursdays, May 28, 2026.

The regional bloc was established in 1975 to promote economic integration, political cooperation and regional stability among West African countries.

In message marking the anniversary, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, called on citizens and member states of the regional bloc to work collectively towards building a stronger and more resilient West Africa.

Dr. Touray said the future of the sub-region depends on the decisions and commitments leaders and citizens make today.
