Xenophobic tensions: 'Ghana’s evacuation response unnecessary, too quick' — Malema

The Leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has criticised Ghana’s decision to evacuate its citizens amid ongoing xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa.

His comments come after weeks of reported violence and unrest, where foreign-owned shops have been attacked and migrants chased away during protests linked to illegal immigration concerns.

In response, the Government of Ghana has evacuated about 300 nationals, out of an expected 800, with the first batch arriving in Accra on Wednesday, May 27.

Reacting to the move, Malema argued that the evacuation response was premature and risked creating a broader negative perception of South Africa as a whole.

He asserted that the situation should not be generalised to the entire country, but rather addressed as isolated incidents requiring law enforcement intervention.

“The Ghana response was not necessary, because it now creates an impression that we are all like that when it is certain section of our society that needs to be contained by law enforcement,” he stated.

Malema further called for more time and diplomatic engagement between Ghana and South Africa to resolve the matter, rather than immediate evacuation measures.

He further stated that blaming migrants for economic challenges only deepens divisions and fuels tensions reminiscent of colonial-era narratives.
