Fake soldiers, rogue cops busted in US$450,000 gold robbery syndicate

Police have dismantled a robbery syndicate made up of serving military and police officers, arresting seven suspects linked to a string of violent attacks across Accra, Tema, Anyinam, Kumasi, and Takoradi.

The suspects allegedly posed as CID operatives and military personnel to rob victims of cash, gold, and mercury at gunpoint.

The probe began after Ivorian investor Mousa Bamba reported being lured to Dzorwulu under the pretense of buying six kilograms of gold valued at US$450,000. The gang robbed him at gunpoint and escaped.

Initial arrests led police to Mohammed Umaro alias “Alhaji” and Gabriel Sewornu alias “Dangote.” Further investigations implicated two military personnel — Lance Corporal Eugene Akurugu and Lance Corporal Emmanuel Arko alias “Bullet” — as well as three police officers: Inspector Richmond Osei, Corporal Gideon Anor, and Lance Corporal Felix Deku Tetteyga.

The police officers have been interdicted pending investigation.

In intelligence-led operations on May 23 and 24, 2026, the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP arrested three more suspects: Justin Oduro alias “Don King” alias “Mafia,” Clement Gyasi, and Farouk Zakari.

All seven suspects are in police custody assisting investigations. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
