Disaster Heavy Rains Displace Over 814 Residents in Agona Brahabekum
TUE, 26 MAY 2026

More than 814 residents of the Agona Brahabekum community in the Agona East District of the Central Region have been rendered homeless after intense, prolonged rainfall triggered severe flooding in the early hours of Friday, May 22, 2026.

According to the Agona East District Director of NADMO, ACDCO Seth A. Williams, the entire community was submerged as floodwaters entered homes and structures, forcing residents to evacuate. The affected population includes 294 men, 310 women and 210 children. Fortunately, no casualties had been recorded at the time of reporting.

NADMO says the disaster occurred despite earlier public education campaigns in Agona Nampong, Agona Nsaba and Agona Brahabekum—identified as the district’s most flood‑prone communities. The sensitisation focused on disaster prevention and community preparedness.

ACDCO Williams described the situation as “unfortunate but preventable,” noting that climate change is intensifying weather patterns and communities must remain vigilant. He identified a choked gutter as the primary cause of the flooding, stressing the need for proper drainage maintenance.

He added that the Member of Parliament for Agona East, Hon. Queenster Maame Pokua Sawyer, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Oscar Mensah, and the Central Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Kwesi Dawood, have been informed, and relief items will soon be distributed to affected households.

Community leader Mr. Jerry Gbedzetor expressed gratitude to NADMO and the Assembly Member, Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, for their swift response and evacuation efforts.

Residents, however, remain distressed, with many losing personal belongings to the floodwaters. They are appealing for urgent government intervention to help them rebuild their lives.
