The Making of “General Mosquito”.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah’s nickname didn’t come from a PR team. It was earned in the heat of Parliament during the Kufuor administration. As a member of the Appointments Committee, he opposed a ministerial nominee he believed had a criminal record and was unfit for office. Despite pressure from party members, traditional leaders, and even President Kufuor himself, Nketiah stood alone and got the nomination rejected.
NPP MPs likened his relentless, defiant style to Sierra Leonean rebel leader Sam Bockarie, alias “General Mosquito.” The name was meant as an insult, but Nketiah adopted it. In his own words, the best way to deal with nicknames as a teacher was to “adopt and adapt”. That stubborn refusal to bend became his political trademark.
Rawlings’ Era and the Political Limelight.
Nketiah’s rise coincided with the era of NDC founder Jerry John Rawlings. He served as MP for Wenchi West from 1992 to 2004 and was Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture from 1997 to 2001.
Though not a personal protégé, he emerged under Rawlings’ NDC and has since positioned himself as a guardian of Rawlings’ values. At Rawlings’ 78th birthday commemoration, Nketiah argued that probity, accountability, and positive defiance should guide both the NDC and the nation. Rawlings himself once joked about Nketiah’s role in the party’s history, acknowledging his influence even if not his looks.
17 Years as General Secretary.
Nketiah first became NDC General Secretary in December 2005, winning nearly 80% of the vote. He held the position for 17 years, surviving internal challenges and retaining control through successive elections.
His 2018 re-election against Koku Anyidoho was decisive: 6,642 votes to 1,655. Critics called him a dictator; supporters called him the engine room of the party. Either way, he built a grassroots network that made him nearly untouchable until 2022.
Taking the Chairmanship in 2022.
In December 2022, Nketiah stepped down as General Secretary to challenge incumbent National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo. He won with 5,569 votes, representing 65.17% of the delegates, against Ofosu-Ampofo’s 2,892 votes.
He framed the victory as “a call to duty,” pledging to unite the party for victory in the 2024 elections. The win marked a shift in NDC’s leadership structure and solidified his position as the party’s chief strategist.
The 2028 Flagbearer Speculation.
Nketiah has not formally declared for the 2028 flagbearership, but he hasn’t ruled it out. In June 2025 he said, “no serious politician rules out any position” and “you never rule out any position”.
His nationwide “Thank You Tour” after the 2024 election has fueled speculation. To supporters, it’s about gratitude and accountability. To critics, it’s a soft campaign for 2028.
Early polling reflects the talk. An April 2026 Africa Policy Lens survey had Nketiah leading with 31.9%, narrowly ahead of Chief of Staff Julius Debrah at 30.1% among constituency executives. A Global InfoAnalytics poll in the same month placed him at 29%. However, other polls show him slipping to second behind Ato Forson among general voters.
Some party voices, like the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, have urged him to step aside to preserve unity. Others see him as the “family head” of the NDC after Rawlings’ passing.
Conclusion.
Asiedu Nketiah’s career is defined by stubbornness that turned a derogatory nickname into a brand, loyalty to the Rawlings legacy, and a 17-year grip on the NDC’s administrative machinery. He defeated Ofosu-Ampofo decisively to become chairman and now stands at a crossroads.
Whether he is genuinely rebuilding the NDC for the next generation or positioning himself for a 2028 run remains the central question in the party’s internal debate. For now, he says it’s too early. But in Ghanaian politics, early rarely means never.
