Commonwealth expresses solidarity with South Africa after deadly floods

The Commonwealth of Nations has expressed solidarity with South Africa following deadly floods and storms that have claimed lives and displaced communities across several provinces.

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, with homes destroyed after torrential rains triggered flooding across six provinces, including the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape, North West and Mpumalanga.

Authorities in South Africa have since declared a national disaster to enable the mobilisation of emergency funds and response resources.

The floods and associated extreme weather conditions, including strong winds and snowfall in some areas, have severely affected informal settlements and key infrastructure.

Cape Town was among the worst-hit areas, forcing the temporary closure of schools and sections of the Table Mountain tourist site as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

In a social media message on Thursday, May 14, Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey described the situation as deeply concerning and extended condolences to affected families.

“The destruction caused by storms and flooding in South Africa is very concerning. We mourn the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones,” she said.

She also reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s support for affected communities and emergency responders working under difficult conditions.

“The Commonwealth stands in solidarity with affected communities, and with the emergency personnel and volunteers responding under immense pressure,” she added.

The Secretary-General further called for stronger climate-resilient infrastructure to reduce future risks as extreme weather events become more frequent and intense globally.
