The 2028 presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned what he describes as state-sponsored harassment of members of the party.
His comments follow the recent arrest of the NPP’s Agona West Constituency Organiser, David Essandoh, for allegedly making a social media post announcing the return of dumsor.
Similarly, Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, has also been remanded into custody over an ongoing case relating to the publication of false news.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 13, and signed by the NPP flagbearer, he said the development undermines free speech and threatens Ghana’s democratic credentials.
“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” portions of the statement read.
The former Vice President further accused the government of using state institutions to intimidate members of the opposition party.
“I condemn in the strongest of terms, the unholy collaboration between the Executive, State investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence members of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia also warned that officials involved in what he termed abuse of state power would one day be held accountable.
He subsequently urged supporters of the NPP to remain resolute and continue holding the government accountable despite what he described as intimidation and harassment.
