Bamako, Mali May 5, 2026
In a dramatic consolidation of power amid one of Mali's gravest security crises in over a decade, General Assimi Goïta the country's military ruler has assumed direct control of the defense ministry, adding it to his existing role as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The Decree
According to a decree read on state TV on Monday, Goïta will assume the additional role of defense minister following the death of the previous minister in large-scale attacks. Under the presidential decree, Goïta will remain president while also taking on the new role, with former armed forces chief of staff Gen. Oumar Diarra appointed to assist him as deputy defense minister.
What Triggered the Move
Mali is facing a deep security crisis following a coordinated assault on junta strongholds led by Tuareg separatists and Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists, during which Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed by a car bomb at his residence.
The attack took place on April 25, killing Camara and members of his family after a vehicle laden with explosives was driven into their residence. (Daily Post Nigeria)
The assault was carried out jointly by fighters from JNIM Al-Qaeda's branch in the Sahel region (the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), an ethnic Tuareg separatist movement, marking the largest attack in the West African country in nearly 15 years.
Several people died in the coordinated attacks, as hundreds of terrorists and rebels stormed Bamako's Sénou International Airport, a nearby military base, and other locations.
Strategic and Political Context
The government described the consolidation of defense responsibilities as a "strategic decision" based on the security circumstances it called "sensitive," with the capital Bamako remaining on high alert.
Following the attacks, the separatists and jihadists were able to capture the key northern town of Kidal and took the strategic northern military base of Tessalit after it was surrendered by Mali's army and its Russian mercenary allies.
Tensions have further escalated with arrests of military personnel, civilians, and political leaders suspected of having ties to the separatists and militants responsible for the attacks. A former Malian minister and junta critic was also abducted from his home by armed men.
Meanwhile, JNIM fighters have intensified pressure on the military government by imposing a blockade around Bamako, setting up roadblocks and checkpoints and disrupting traffic particularly the route between Bamako and the western city of Kayes.
Goïta's Grip on Power
Goiter’s military government came to power after coups in 2020 and 2021, pledging to restore security a promise it has struggled to fulfill. It has cut ties with its former colonial ruler France, expelled French forces, and dismissed United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Last July, military authorities granted Goïta a five-year presidential mandate, which can be renewed "as many times as necessary" without an election.
Russia's Wagner Group, which had been aiding Malian forces against armed groups since 2021, has now become the Africa Corps an organization under the direct control of the Russian defense ministry.
Outlook
By combining the presidency, the commander-in-chief role, and now the defense ministry into a single person, Goïta has made himself the undisputed nerve center of Mali's military and political decision-making at a moment when the country faces its most serious internal security challenge in years. Whether this consolidation translates into effective battlefield results or deepens concerns about authoritarianism remains to be seen.
