Owusu, the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, says patient safety, health, and well-being remain highest priority at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
In that regard, systems are being strengthened to prevent recurrence of power outages, and the hospital remains committed to always upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety.
The Regional Director was responding to backlash in the social media space following some power outages and purported delays in switching over to the hospital’s plant, which duly affected quality health care services and emergency care.
On the afternoon of Thursday, 16th April 2026, following a disruption in the main grid power supply, the hospital's auto-start standby generator did not engage automatically.
The generator had functioned the previous day when the main grid was disrupted.
“Our in-house clinical engineering team responded, with additional support mobilized from a specialist technical team based in Accra, Dr. Okoh-Owusu said.
Engineers from Cummins, the manufacturers and suppliers of the generator, also reported on-site to conduct further technical assessments and repairs to restore the back-up power generating unit to optimal performance”, she explained.
She said patient safety remained a priority throughout the incident, and fortunately no mortalities were recorded.
“We appreciate the concerns expressed by clients, stakeholders, and the public. This feedback reflects the trust placed in our institution and reinforces our commitment to continuous improvement,” she added.
She said the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital remained fully operational and dedicated to providing quality healthcare, in line with the service mandate and guiding principle: “Your Health, Our Concern”.
