The Persecution of Tsatsu Tsikata: A Stain on Ghana’s Justice System

Let us call it what it was Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata’s incarceration was not justice; it was political persecution, pure and simple.

For years, a section of this country driven by envy, ideological hatred, and political opportunism made it their mission to destroy a man whose only “crime” was his brilliance, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to Ghana. Tsatsu Tsikata was not just a public servant; he was a builder of institutions, a defender of national interest, and a man far ahead of his time.

While others in public office amassed wealth and flaunted luxury, Tsikata chose discipline and sacrifice. As head of GNPC, he protected the public purse with uncommon integrity. He lived modestly, rejected excess, and stood in solidarity with ordinary Ghanaians even during periods of national hardship.

During the energy challenges of the 1990s, he demonstrated solidarity with ordinary Ghanaians by declining to install a generator at his residence, despite the inconvenience.

At a time when many in leadership insulated themselves from national hardship, he chose restraint, while others in comparable positions enjoyed privileges, Lawyer Tsikata prioritized the prudent management of GNPC’s resources.

Yet, despite this, he became the subject of sustained criticism and political attacks, culminating in his removal from office and eventual prosecution.

This is not propaganda; it is a record his critics cannot erase, Yet, that very integrity made him a target under the administration of President John Kufuor, the machinery of the state was weaponized against him.

Decisions taken collectively in the interest of national development were twisted into criminal accusations. Policies that contributed to expanding Ghana’s economic and communication landscape were recast as wrongdoing all in a calculated effort to break a man and tarnish his legacy.

This was not accountability. This was vendetta.

And history is exposing that vendetta for what it was.

Today, the same voices that cheered his imprisonment have suddenly found their silence or worse, their defense when confronted with controversies surrounding figures like Mr Ken Ofori-Atta the former finance minister.

The hypocrisy is not just glaring; it is offensive to the conscience of any fair-minded Ghanaian.

Where was this zeal for “justice” then?

Why is accountability selective?
Why are some persecuted while others are protected?

These are not rhetorical questions they are indictments.

The truth is uncomfortable for Tsikata’s detractors: the very decisions they criminalized have proven beneficial to Ghana. The man they sought to disgrace has outlived their propaganda and reclaimed his place in history. What was meant for his destruction has instead become his vindication.

But this is bigger than one man.
If Ghana continues down the path where justice is dictated by political convenience, then patriotism itself becomes a liability.

Who will serve with integrity if excellence is punished and mediocrity rewarded? Who will sacrifice for the nation if the reward is humiliation and imprisonment?

The treatment meted out to Tsatsu Tsikata was not just an injustice against a man it was an assault on merit, integrity, and national progress.

And until we confront that truth honestly, we risk repeating the same cycle of persecution, hypocrisy, and selective justice that continues to poison our political landscape.

Look Dotse, who brought GNPC ? Don´t forget GNPC was established after Kufour found oil in Ghana while Tsikata was using money for oil exploration planting Cocoa in the Volta region. By the way, has Ken Oforiatta been charged and found guilty for any ofence? Tsikata was sent to court ! I am not defending Ken but most Voltarians up to today don´t see JJ Rawllings autrocities. Give us a blake !!!

Just in....
