2026 World Cup: Carlos Queiroz hails Black Stars appointment as 'a mission, not just a job'

Veteran gaffer Carlos Queiroz has opened a new chapter in international football with a message defined by gratitude, ambition and quiet conviction, as he begins his tenure as head coach of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

In his first public statement since being appointed, the veteran Portuguese tactician struck a reflective tone, describing his arrival as both a privilege and a responsibility.

He expressed deep appreciation to the Ghana Football Association for entrusting him with the role, while framing the assignment as a continuation of a long career shaped by global challenges and high-stakes tournaments.

“Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons, and unforgettable journeys,” he noted, underlining his readiness to bring decades of international experience to bear on Ghana’s World Cup campaign. “Today, I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career.”

The appointment marks a fresh direction for Ghana as they regroup for another shot at global success after recent inconsistencies on the international stage.

The new coach emphasized unity, discipline and ambition as the cornerstones of his project, pointing to a nation he described as rich in talent, pride and footballing identity.

Ghana’s football leadership believes the experience of the former Real Madrid and Portugal assistant manager could prove decisive in navigating the pressures of a World Cup cycle.

His résumé, built across multiple continents and major tournaments, is expected to bring structure and tactical maturity to a team often praised for its raw ability but criticised for inconsistency.

Queiroz will meet the players next month when the Black Stars regroup for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After underwhelming outings at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage.
