The West Africa Network of Activists and Media Defense Lawyers (WANAMDEL) has condemned the alleged assault on one of its members, Paul Kamara Esq., by police officers in Sierra Leone.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 4, at the Adonkia Police Station in Freetown, where the lawyer had gone to follow up on investigations into the death of a colleague, Augustine Sensie Bangura.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 8, the group said Kamara was attacked after attempting to intervene in a confrontation between a police officer and a civilian at the station.

“WANAMDEL strongly condemns the assault on our colleague, Paul Kamara Esq., by police officers in Sierra Leone,” paet of the statement read.

The group said Mr Kamara, who identified himself as both a lawyer and journalist, was physically assaulted, restrained and pepper-sprayed by officers despite his attempt to de-escalate tensions.

It further raised concerns about what it described as a lack of professionalism and disregard for the rule of law by the officers involved.

WANAMDEL also criticised the response of officers at the station when Mr Kamara attempted to file a complaint, alleging that he was met with indifference and ridicule.

“Such actions, including intimidation, assault, and the use of force, demonstrate a disregard for the rule of law and police professional standards,” the statement noted.

The group has called for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the incident, as well as sanctions against officers found culpable.
