The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed commitment to the diplomatic resolution of rising tensions along the borders of Guinea with its neighbours, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The regional body is sending a technical assessment mission to the Yenga border area between Guinea and Sierra Leone to evaluate the situation and provide recommendations.
In a statement dated March 12, the regional bloc noted that recent developments along the Lofa border between Guinea and Liberia have added new complexities.
The Commission is urging affected countries to exercise restraint and resolve disputes peacefully to prevent escalation in the Mano River Basin.
“ECOWAS urges all affected Member States to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate tensions, respect internationally recognized boundaries, refrain from unilateral actions that could undermine bilateral relations or regional security, and prioritize the use of ECOWAS-facilitated diplomatic channels for the peaceful resolution of disputes,” the statement read in part.
The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with national authorities to foster dialogue and cooperation in the region.
“The Commission remains dedicated to fostering mutual respect, cooperation, and lasting peace in the Mano River Basin for the benefit of all West Africans,” the release emphasised.
ECOWAS said the mission and ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to provide a comprehensive assessment of all areas of current and potential friction and to ensure that tensions are managed without conflict.
