Namibia Embassy staff robber admits burning diplomatic passport, sold iPhone 15Pro-Max for Ghc2,000 at Circle

A 24-year-old Okada rider has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with a robbery that occurred near the Namibia High Commission at the Airport Residential Area on February 23, 2026.

Police say the suspect has confessed to the crime after he was tracked down and arrested. Two of the victim’s stolen mobile phones have also been recovered.

The victim, a female staff member of the Namibian High Commission in Accra, reported the incident to the police on February 25.

She told investigators that on February 23 she was walking toward the Namibia High Commission when a young man riding a motorbike snatched her handbag and sped away.

The bag contained an iPhone 15 Pro Max valued at GH¢19,000 and a Huawei P50 Pro worth about GH¢11,000. Also inside the bag were her Namibian diplomatic passport, driver’s licence, house and office keys, ATM cards from FBN Bank and Republic Bank, and other personal items.

According to the police, officers from the Regional Criminal Investigations Department, working with the Charlie SWAT Unit, traced the stolen iPhone to Galaway near the Agbogbloshie Total Filling Station. This led to the arrest of 26-year-old spare parts dealer Miracle Asare, from whom the phone was retrieved.

Further investigations led officers to Kwame Nkrumah Circle where two phone dealers, 40-year-old Theophilus Darko and 26-year-old Benjamin Opoku, were arrested after police identified them as part of the chain through which the stolen phone had been traded.

The Huawei P50 Pro was later traced to Dansoman where police arrested 41-year-old Emmanuel Abangbase. He told investigators that he purchased the phone from 24-year-old Daniel Ashiabi, an Okada rider.

Ashiabi was later arrested and reportedly confessed to committing the robbery. Police say he admitted selling the iPhone for GH¢2,500 and the Huawei phone for GH¢1,000. He also admitted burning the victim’s diplomatic passport and other documents.

Police investigations further indicate that Ashiabi may have been involved in similar robbery incidents in Achimota, Kaneshie and the Airport Residential Area.

He remains in police custody assisting with investigations, while Theophilus Darko, Benjamin Opoku and Emmanuel Abangbase have been granted police enquiry bail.
