Alagumgube Global backs Mahama’s toll comeback to rebuild roads

A developmental association, Alagumgube Global, has thrown its support behind John Dramani Mahama for reintroducing road tolls in Ghana, arguing the move could restore sustainable funding for road maintenance and expansion.

Founder Gabriel Agambila said a modern, transparent electronic tolling system would ensure revenue is efficiently collected and reinvested into national infrastructure. He is urging the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority to integrate vehicle number plates with owners’ debit or credit cards, allowing automatic deductions when vehicles pass through toll booths.

According to Mr. Agambila, a dedicated lane should be reserved for foreign vehicles whose financial accounts may not be accessible to the automated system. He emphasized that the proposed EZ-Pass-style platform must be fully operational before toll roads reopen, warning that manual collection risks leakages that could undermine national development.

Alagumgube Global is also advocating that a portion of toll revenue be allocated to aviation infrastructure, including maintenance of Sunyani Airport and completion of Bolgatanga Airport, a project the association says it initiated to boost regional connectivity. The group has pledged technical support to help implement the system.

Beyond infrastructure financing, the association raised concerns about public sector energy use. It criticized some government appointees for leaving official vehicles running unnecessarily during events or office hours, describing the practice as wasteful and inconsistent with national efficiency goals. Officials, it suggested, could simply notify drivers shortly before departure instead of idling engines for extended periods.

The association further highlighted energy losses in public offices where air conditioners are reportedly left on after working hours and throughout weekends. It welcomed ongoing efforts by state institutions to adopt solar power solutions, describing renewable energy adoption as a practical step toward reducing operational costs.
