Dzodze demolitions begin for ‘Big Push’ road dualisation in Ketu North

A demolition exercise has commenced in Dzodze in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region to clear roadside structures for the dualisation of the Dzodze stretch under Lot 8 of the government's “Big Push” road project.

The exercise, which began on Thursday, February 26, targets properties situated within the right-of-way earmarked for the road expansion.

Several structures have been affected, including some churches, portions of fuel stations, and sections of public facilities such as the police station.

Ahead of the official demolition, several property owners undertook self-demolition after receiving compensation packages from the government. Their actions followed earlier engagements with authorities over the scope and impact of the project.

In January, a town hall meeting and sensitisation exercise were organised for residents and project-affected persons. The engagement was led by Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, in collaboration with the Ketu North Municipal Assembly, headed by Rev. Martin Amenaki, the Municipal Chief Executive.

Officials from the Regional Highways Authority, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the project contractors were also in attendance.

During the meeting, affected persons were briefed on the details of the dualisation project and assured of due compensation before the commencement of demolition works. Some of those who spoke to the Ghana News Agency confirmed receiving their compensation, a development that informed their decision to dismantle their structures voluntarily.

The dualisation of the Dzodze stretch is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, and enhance the movement of people, goods and transit vehicles along the corridor.

Residents remain optimistic that, once completed, the project will stimulate economic activity in Dzodze and surrounding communities, while strengthening connectivity within the municipality and beyond.
