The Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has hailed the enduring legacy of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on the 60th anniversary of his ousting.
The coup, which took place on February 24, 1966, occurred while Nkrumah was on an official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Despite the violent overthrow, Armah-Kofi Buah emphasized that Nkrumah’s ideals continue to shape the nation.
“Though the coup plotters succeeded on that day, they failed in their ultimate mission. The torch Nkrumah lit still burns,” the MP said in a social media post on Tuesday, February 24, marking the occasion.
The lawmaker whose constituency covers Nkrumah’s hometown, Nkroful, highlighted the lasting impact of the nation’s first President’s policies on development.
“From the industrial heartbeat of Tema to the hydroelectric power of Akosombo, his blueprints remain the very pillars upon which our republic rests. He did not build for the next election but rather for the next century,” Armah-Kofi Buah added.
The MP called on Ghanaians to recommit to the founding father’s vision of an independent, industrious, and Pan-African nation, stressing that the dream of Nkrumah remains alive six decades after the coup.
