One person has been confirmed dead while four others are undergoing treatment following a crash involving a petrol tanker at Kaase in Kumasi on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred near the Ghana Water Company facility at about 9.20 am. The Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
A team from the Kejetia Fire Post, led by Station Officer Prince Osei, arrived at the scene shortly after the alert. Firefighters worked quickly to avert a potential fire outbreak and rescue victims trapped in the mangled vehicles.
Preliminary findings show that the fully loaded commercial petrol tanker, bearing registration number GT 5560 16, failed to ascend a steep stretch of the road. The vehicle subsequently rolled backward and collided with three vehicles behind it. The affected vehicles were a Mazda van with registration AS 9412 10, a Toyota Vitz with registration GT 4275 and another Mazda van with registration GW 5768 2.
Four injured victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital for medical attention. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The body has been handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.
Fire officers secured the area and removed the damaged vehicles, restoring normal traffic flow by about 10.30 am.
The Fire Service has advised motorists to be cautious, particularly when driving behind heavy-duty vehicles on steep roads.
