Craftsmanship and vocational training were brought into sharp focus over the weekend as the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly benefited from the government’s National Apprenticeship Programme, an initiative designed to address youth unemployment and promote sustainable livelihoods.
The programme, led by the National Youth Authority in partnership with the Youth Employment Agency and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, involved the distribution of tools and essential equipment to apprentices and master craftspersons at the CCMA Assembly Hall.
The ceremony drew a large gathering of stakeholders and beneficiaries, highlighting the government’s commitment to equipping young people with practical skills. Present at the event were the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Hon. Kwamena Minta Nyarku, the Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur, and the Central Regional Coordinator for the programme, Ebenezer Abeiku Essien.
Addressing participants, the Mayor said the initiative would play a key role in reducing unemployment and encouraging entrepreneurship within the metropolis. He noted that providing young people with vocational skills would help curb social vices, strengthen local industries and drive economic growth.
He cautioned beneficiaries against selling the equipment distributed under the scheme.
“The items received and distributed to beneficiaries are not to be sold. Anyone found selling any of the items will be made to face the law,” he warned.
The Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North reaffirmed Parliament’s backing for youth focused policies and urged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity to build lasting careers.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is part of broader efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education and training as a pathway to economic independence. By investing in practical skills, the initiative seeks to narrow the gap between education and employment while positioning young people as vital contributors to national development.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the implementing agencies, describing the support as timely and crucial to expanding their trades and improving productivity.
Stakeholders say continued investment in vocational training will help transform lives, boost productivity and support economic growth in Cape Coast and across the country.
