Chiefs and residents of Nogokpo in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region on Saturday, February 7, carried out a massive cleanup exercise aimed at improving sanitation and strengthening communal unity.
The exercise was led by the divisional chief of Nogokpo, Torgbui Sabah V, together with the assembly member, Hon Jonas Fotor Agbagba, unit committee members, opinion leaders and residents. Participants cleared weeds and swept the town’s bushy cemetery as part of efforts to rid the area of filth.
Addressing residents, Torgbui Sabah V urged the community to remain united and stressed the need for regular cleanup exercises to sustain the town’s cleanliness. He emphasised that keeping Nogokpo clean and attractive requires collective responsibility.
Hon Jonas Fotor Agbagba said the exercise would not be a one-off activity, noting that plans were already in place to make it a regular feature.
"These exercises will not stop here; we will be doing this twice every month to make our beloved town clean and beautiful," As the president initiated, every first Saturday of every month we will be cleaning our environment, and also the first Keta market day after the first Saturday," he added."
"Anyone who fails to honor will be brought to book," he concluded.
Speaking on behalf of the youth and residents, unit committee member Mr Lawrence Wonder Kpexor expressed appreciation to Torgbui Sabah V and his elders for their active participation. He also commended residents for turning up in large numbers.
"I am very grateful to all of us for coming out today in our numbers to participate in this month's cleanup exercise. I can say we have made history today because in the past, when we called for this, only a few people always honored it, but today we are almost 200, and it is beautiful," he said.
"I will appeal to all of you to keep it up because cleanliness, they say, is next to godliness," "To those that refuse to care, as our assembly member stated, the laws of the country will be enforced, and no one should tag us wicked when we start implementing the law," he concluded.
Community members expressed excitement about the initiative and thanked Torgbui Sabah V and the leadership for spearheading the exercise, pledging their full cooperation for future cleanups.
The exercise has given Nogokpo a renewed look, with residents optimistic that improved sanitation will benefit the entire community and enhance overall wellbeing.
