Ghana’s democratic tradition has long been admired for its tolerance, internal party democracy, and respect for differing political views. It is therefore deeply troubling that recent developments within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in the Bekwai Constituency, appear to undermine these very principles.
Over the past few days, credible reports have emerged of physical and verbal threats, intimidation, and psychological pressure being directed at some party delegates. These incidents are allegedly being perpetrated by certain Constituency Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, and some hard-line party activists in many Constituencies. Notably, the affected individuals are largely delegates perceived to be aligned with the Bryan Project, a campaign supporting Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
According to the reports, delegates are being threatened with the removal of their names from the Constituency Album after 31st January, a move that, if carried out, would amount to political victimisation and a clear abuse of party structures. Such actions, if true, represent a dangerous precedent that threatens internal cohesion and undermines the democratic foundations of the party.
The impact of these alleged threats has been significant. In Bekwai Constituency, fear and anxiety have begun to take hold among some party members. Several delegates now feel reluctant to openly express support for Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, participate actively in meetings, or even engage on social media platforms for fear of reprisals. This climate of fear is unhealthy and unacceptable in any democratic political organisation.
It must be stated unequivocally that intimidation, coercion, and political harassment have no place in our party or in Ghana’s democracy. Political competition should be based on ideas, competence, vision, and credibility, not fear.
I strongly condemn these acts of intimidation and urge all party stakeholders to desist from any behaviour that threatens unity and fairness. Encouragingly, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong is fully aware of the challenges confronting his supporters and has given firm assurances that no supporter will be victimised for exercising their democratic right to associate and support a candidate of their choice.
At this critical moment, party members must remain courageous, visible, and steadfast. The strength of the NPP has always been rooted in unity, discipline, and respect for internal democracy. As we look ahead to the future, particularly the crucial task of securing political power in 2028, it is imperative that we conduct ourselves in a manner that strengthens, rather than weakens, the party.
Bekwai Constituency, like every constituency across Ghana, deserves a political environment free from fear and intimidation; one where delegates can freely participate, express their views, and contribute to the collective goal of national development. History will judge us not only by the victories we win, but by the principles we uphold along the way.
