The Women’s Organiser of the United Party (UP), Hajia Gloria Amenu, has said New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirants must promise to bring back former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Ofori-Atta, who is currently in the United States, is facing corruption and anti-corruption charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has submitted a formal extradition request to the United States for his return to face the charges.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day programme on Thursday, January 8, Hajia Amenu said the public demand for Ofori-Atta’s return should be a key campaign issue for those seeking to lead the opposition party into the 2028 general elections.

“It should be a campaign message for NPP flagbearers, whether Kennedy or Bawumia, to say, ‘I will bring Ken back. If I don’t bring him, don’t vote for me,’” she said. “It should be on their campaign platforms, but it is not there.”

“They are all Ghanaians, and we are all expecting that Ken comes back home to answer to all the allegations,” she added.

Meanwhile, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Mr. Ofori-Atta on Tuesday, January 6, over the status of his stay in the United States.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, which authorises a person to stay in the US legally beyond the validity of their visa,” his lawyers said in a statement.

“Under US law, a change of status by this method is common.”
