Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, has indicated that Ghana was on a dangerous economic path under the previous NPP administration and risked becoming an international laughingstock if the party had remained in power.
Speaking on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily on Thursday, January 8, as President John Dramani Mahama's administration marked one year in office, he argued that the outcome of the 2024 general election saved the country from further economic decline.
According to him, the economy inherited by the Mahama administration was severely distressed, with Ghana shut out of the international capital market and struggling under what he described as a “junk economy,” a situation he said undermined investor confidence and national credibility.
Mr Tanko noted that President Mahama's return to office benefited from experience gained from previously leading the country and spending eight years in opposition, which, he said, allowed the President to correct past mistakes and quickly stabilise governance structures.
He commended the administration for what he termed as a scandal-free first year in office, stressing that the President's firm stance on accountability has shaped the conduct of government appointees.
“The country was going down the drain under the NPP government, and it would have become a laughingstock if we had not stopped the NPP in the last general election. The economy had been described as a junk economy, and Ghana could not access the capital market.
“When Mahama assumed office, he benefited from hindsight, having previously governed the country and spent eight years in opposition, with a clear promise to put things right. In one year, we have not witnessed any scandal, which is commendable. This is because, upon appointing us, he made it clear that public resources belong to the people of Ghana and not to appointees or their families,” he said.
