Fresh violence linked to a long-running chieftaincy dispute has left two people injured at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The clash, which occurred on Sunday, December 28, erupted in front of the Gomoa Nyanyano chief’s palace as rival factions confronted each other, plunging the community into tension and fear.
In response, the Central East Regional Police Command has tightened security in the area, deploying more than 50 police officers and other security personnel to restore calm and prevent further disturbances. Police have since taken control of the township to maintain law and order.
Gomoa Nyanyano has been gripped by persistent chieftaincy disputes following the death of Nana Obeng Wiabo, with rival claims to the stool remaining unresolved for several years.
According to police sources, the latest violence was triggered when one faction organised a float procession. As the group entered the town, members of the opposing faction reportedly mobilised and blocked the main road to stop the procession, leading to clashes between the two sides.
The injured victims were attended to as security forces moved in to disperse the crowds and stabilise the situation. Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to prevent further escalation of the dispute.
