Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, has stated that the profession of fisherfolk and fishmongers should never be a basis for disrespect.

According to the Vice President, they form important part of the fish value chain and therefore deserves dignity, investment, and protection.

During a working visit to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, she acknowledged the deep indigenous knowledge of the sea, weather patterns, and fishing practices possessed by fisherfolk, fishmongers, and coastal communities. “This knowledge must be respected and integrated into policy.”

“Coming from a fishing community myself, I was reminded of the saying that ‘there is wealth in the water.’ We must find ways to bring that wealth out responsibly, while improving the quality of life of the fishermen and fishmongers who feed us daily.”

The Minister Hon. Emelia Arthur touched on an ongoing effort to establish a dedicated Blue Economy Commission, in addition to the two existing core agencies—the Fisheries Commission and the National Premix Fuel Secretariat (NPFS).

The Vice President noted that these institutional reforms reflect government’s commitment to a more coordinated approach to Ghana’s fisheries and aquatic resources.

She highlighted the significant progress made in the sector, including the passage of a new Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, increased aquaculture production targets, strengthened action against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing through patrols and vessel suspensions, and the establishment of Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area.

These measures, she said are critical not only for restoring fish stocks and addressing the EU “yellow card,” but also for securing long-term growth.

She emphasized the importance of value addition within the sector, noting that the establishment of the Fisheries College at Anomabo is one such step toward professionalizing the sector and harnessing resources.

She also highlighted efforts to tackle environmental threats such as galamsey, plastic pollution, and toxic waste, and change negative perceptions about fishing.

She commended the Ministry for its efforts and the diversity of expertise within its leadership, and encouraged continued teamwork across the government and respect for indigenous knowledge.
