UniMAC Signs Landmark MoU with AKUNA to Boost Industry-Focused Creative Education

The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AKUNA, marking a significant step toward strengthening industry-driven creative education in Ghana.

The agreement was signed by UniMAC’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, and the Chief Operating Officer of the Akuna Group Ghana, Mariam K. A. Buahin.

The MoU will provide UniMAC students with structured mentorship, hands-on industry training, content‑creation opportunities and exposure to the commercial side of the creative economy. It represents a future in which academic expertise and industry innovation converge to equip Ghana’s emerging media professionals with the skills needed to build sustainable careers, expand their global reach and contribute meaningfully to the creative sector.

AKUNA, a dynamic player in the creative and entertainment industries, is known for transforming storytelling through technology and immersive experiences. The company is driven by the belief that Ghanaian stories deserve global visibility.

Prof. Mensah described the signing as the formalisation of a long-standing relationship with AKUNA, noting that it would accelerate UniMAC’s mission to prepare students for global opportunities.

“Our goal has always been to equip graduates not only with academic knowledge but also with practical skills applicable across diverse creative sectors,” he said.

Ms Buahin reaffirmed AKUNA’s commitment to nurturing Ghanaian creative talent, adding that UniMAC is a strong and strategic partner for achieving this vision.

The Rector of the Institute of Film and Television (IFT), Professor Samuel Manasseh Yirenkyi, welcomed the MoU, describing it as a framework that will deepen student engagement with industry professionals.

“Today is a perfect day for us to officially start guiding our work,” he said, highlighting the benefits students will gain through mentorships, internships, collaborative content creation and industry-focused training tailored for both local and international markets.

The ceremony was attended by senior UniMAC leadership, including the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Winston Kwame Abroampa; the Acting Registrar, Dr Obaapanin Adu Oforiwaa; the Director of the Centre for Global Education and Collaboration (CGEC), Dr Lawrencia Agyepong; the UniMAC‑IFT Finance Director, Emmanuel Brown; and other members of management.
