The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has noted that the government is developing laws to combat misinformation and disinformation online without curtailing freedom of expression.
The minister who also serves as the MP for Ningo Prampram, emphasized the need to balance digital safety with individual liberties.
He made the remarks while speaking at the UN High-level Meeting reviewing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) on Tuesday, December 16.
The minister highlighted the government’s ongoing digitalization efforts, including investments in connectivity, public digital infrastructure, and nationwide digital literacy programs.
“We’re developing frameworks to deal with mis- and disinformation while respecting the rights of free speech online,” Sam George said.
He also noted that the country is modernizing legislation governing the digital economy and strengthening cybersecurity and data protection measures to build trust in the digital ecosystem.
“Digital inclusion remains a central pillar of our efforts through nationwide digital literacy campaigns, Community Information Centers, the 1 Million Coders program, and the Girls in ICT initiative, empowering women, youth, and underserved communities to participate effectively in the digital economy,” he said.
Sam George further called for international cooperation to ensure equitable digital access and responsible governance of emerging technologies and pledged Ghana’s readiness to collaborate with global partners to create a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital future.
